Before your first ChatGPT ad campaign: a practical checklist

Prepare account access, one clear offer, a working destination and conversion tracking before your first ChatGPT ad campaign, with a practical launch checklist.

Your first ChatGPT ad campaign is ready when an eligible account, a specific offer, a working destination and a tested conversion event support the same business goal. Set the spending limit and agree who can approve changes before submitting ads for review.

A visitor should be able to understand the offer and take the next step without starting their research again.

Confirm that the account is ready

OpenAI requires the legal entity advertising and receiving the bill to be based in a supported self-service country. Creating an account alone does not establish access. Check the current availability list and confirm that your actual account can advertise in the intended market.

Check the billing profile, payment method and account verification. Invite the people who need access using their own accounts. OpenAI includes these tasks in its account and campaign quickstart.

For client work, write down who owns the ad account, who pays the media bill and who approves the creative. An agency should have the access it needs without sharing the owner's password.

Give one offer a clear path to purchase or inquiry

Choose a product or service line and one primary action. A first campaign for a specific backpack can answer a useful question: can this offer produce new purchases at an acceptable cost? A campaign promoting every item in the store makes it harder to interpret the result.

Make the headline, description and image describe the same offer. Send the visitor to the relevant page, with the details they need to decide: price, availability, delivery or service terms, and a working next step.

Buying an ad does not purchase a recommendation inside ChatGPT's organic answer. OpenAI keeps paid placements and answers independent.

Check the page on a phone. Follow the purchase or inquiry path yourself. Look for mismatched prices, an unavailable item, a form that fails or shipping restrictions that appear only at checkout.

Context hints can add a customer situation that helps explain the offer's relevance. They do not guarantee a particular placement or enforce delivery restrictions. Our context hints guide gives practical rewrites; the official guidance explains their limits.

Test the business action you intend to measure

Decide what counts as success before installing tracking. For a store, that may be a completed purchase. For a service, it may be a submitted inquiry, followed by a separate check that the lead is qualified.

OpenAI supports conversion events through the Pixel, Conversions API or both. Reported conversions depend on the campaign's event configuration, attribution window and available measurement signals. Use the measurement documentation for the current setup rules.

Test the agreed action using your site's supported test process. Verify that the event reaches the intended data source once and carries the correct action. If browser and server tracking send the same conversion, use the same event ID for deduplication.

Add consistent tracking parameters to the ad's destination so paid visits can be identified in your analytics. Agree how you will reconcile campaign reporting with orders or the CRM. Different attribution methods and consent conditions can produce different totals; a discrepancy needs investigation before it becomes a claim about results.

Install and test tracking with the consent and privacy settings your website requires. A working pixel should not bypass a visitor's choice.

Set the spending limit and the review decision

Write the media budget separately from setup and management fees. Decide the maximum loss the business can accept, the outcome you will review and the date of that review.

Check the budget type rather than relying on its label. OpenAI describes a daily budget as an average over its budget week; spend can be higher on an individual day. A campaign-total budget provides stricter control over total spend. Minimum daily budgets vary by billing currency. Review the current budget and scheduling rules before choosing the settings.

At the review, compare qualified inquiries or new purchases with the agreed cost target. A cheap click or a completed launch cannot establish that the economics work. If you need to set the target, the business-fit guide includes a worked customer-acquisition calculation.

Name the person allowed to change the budget. Decide who pauses the campaign if the destination fails or measurement stops working. Record those responsibilities where the client and operator can both find them.

Review the launch before ads can start spending

Read the saved ad, destination URL, locations and budget together. Check that the offer is still available and that the intended conversion event is configured.

OpenAI notes that a first campaign may not expose scheduling options before publication. If a future start date is essential, do not publish simply to unlock those controls: ads could start after approval before you set the schedule. Confirm the current account workflow in the quickstart's scheduling guidance.

Before submission, you should be able to check each item:

  • The right account and target market are eligible; verification and billing are ready.
  • The ad, context hints and destination describe the same available offer.
  • The visitor's next step works on mobile and the primary event has been tested.
  • The media limit, service fees, review date and change permissions are agreed.
  • Timing has been checked before any action that could allow delivery.

After approval, confirm that the ads are actually serving and check early visits and event data. OpenAI warns that spend reporting can lag behind clicks and impressions; a displayed $0 does not establish that no charges have accrued. Investigate delivery problems using the account's status information.

For help with preparation, review the service scope and exclusions. Standard pixel work depends on a technical check; custom CAPI integrations and substantial tracking repairs are quoted separately.
