How ChatGPT ad targeting works: context, controls and limits
Understand context hints, campaign targeting controls and the limits of predicting which conversations will show your ad.

A useful targeting brief starts with the situation in which your offer helps someone. “Anyone interested in software” gives a campaign very little to work with.
For a booking tool, that situation might be a studio owner looking for a way to reduce missed appointments. The product, customer task and destination need to support that use case.
Context hints explain the offer
OpenAI’s context hint guidance treats hints as additional information about what you sell, who it is for and when it helps. They are not exact-match keywords or commands guaranteeing a particular placement.
Write verified product facts and recognizable customer situations. A phrase such as “online booking and reminders for single-location studios” is useful if the product actually provides those features. A pasted list of broad search keywords gives less explanation.
Keep material exclusions in campaign settings where supported. Writing “only show after 6 p.m.” in a hint does not create a schedule control. The same applies to a country or a device restriction.
Use the controls that exist in your account
The campaign guide documents location and platform options, with restrictions that vary by account and campaign type. New product-feed campaigns currently use country-level geographic targeting. Some new self-serve accounts also have home-country delivery requirements.
Inspect the available settings instead of importing assumptions from another ad platform. Save the launch configuration so you can distinguish a targeting change from a creative change later.
Relevance is not access to private chats
OpenAI’s explanation for users says advertisers do not receive users’ private conversations and ads do not change the organic answer. Avoid planning around exporting chat transcripts or paying to make the assistant recommend you.
You can assess the visitors and outcomes your own business receives, subject to your measurement and consent setup. Ask which landing-page visitors convert and what those customers buy. Use those outcomes to guide the next campaign change.
Change one part of the brief at a time
Record the initial offer, destination, hints and settings. If visitors arrive but do not take the intended action, inspect the page and measurement before making the hints longer.
For each edit, write the reason: perhaps the current message describes the wrong customer size, or the page does not explain a feature the ad promises. Allow for reporting delays and a small sample when assessing it.
The context hint writing guide gives detailed examples. In the change log, connect each edit with the result you observed. Hints cannot guarantee a particular conversation placement.
