ChatGPT Ads: how they work, costs and your first test
Understand ChatGPT Ads: placement, audience, account access, context hints, pricing and a practical way to plan and measure your first test.

ChatGPT Ads lets businesses buy sponsored placements in ChatGPT through OpenAI Ads Manager. The system considers a conversation's context alongside the ad, its destination and other eligible signals. A person researching a product or service can encounter an ad relevant to that decision.
This guide covers what you are buying, who can see it, how costs work and what to check before a first test. If you already understand the channel, use the first campaign walkthrough for the setup sequence.
What a ChatGPT ad looks like
A sponsored unit can appear below a ChatGPT response. It includes an advertiser name, headline, description, creative image and destination. OpenAI's advertiser introduction shows these components.
Imagine a person comparing desks for a small home office. A furniture ad may appear below the answer, linking to suitable desks. This is an illustration of the placement, not a prediction that a particular advertiser will appear in that conversation.
OpenAI separates advertising from answer generation. Buying a sponsored placement does not buy a recommendation in the answer, and an ad is not an endorsement from OpenAI. Keep this distinction in your brief: paid traffic and organic AI visibility need different plans.
Who sees the ads, and who can advertise?
Ads may appear for eligible Free and Go users in supported regions. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free; accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 are excluded. These conditions are explained in OpenAI's user-facing FAQ.
For a business software seller, the audience limit matters before creative production starts. People who use ChatGPT for work may already have an ad-free subscription. Ask whether the buyers you hope to reach are also in the audience that can see your campaign.
Advertiser access is a separate question. Check the legal entity's country against the current Ads Manager availability list. Then check billing, verification, category eligibility and target market access in the account. A supported country does not remove those other conditions.
Some new self-serve accounts can initially advertise only in their home country. Selecting another location does not override that limit. OpenAI's international targeting guidance describes the requirements. Our availability guide helps separate account access from audience availability.
How targeting and context hints work
A search query often states a need in a few words. In a ChatGPT conversation, a person may explain constraints, compare alternatives and ask follow-up questions. This changes how you describe the situation your product serves.
At ad-group level, context hints describe conversations, topics or keywords that could be relevant to the offer. They guide matching alongside other signals. They are neither exact-match keywords nor a guarantee of delivery in those conversations. OpenAI's ad-group documentation explains how hints are used.
For more examples, read how to write context hints. For channel planning, compare the role of the offer and message in our ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads guide.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
There is no single price for a ChatGPT ad. Campaign objectives determine the buying and optimization model: Views uses impression billing, Clicks uses valid-click billing, and Conversions optimizes toward a supported event with eligible click or impression billing options. A conversion objective does not mean you pay only when a sale happens.
Keep four numbers separate: the campaign budget, maximum bid, actual media cost and any service fee. The minimum daily budget is an account floor, not a forecast of average CPC or customer acquisition cost. The official table checked on October 13, 2026 lists USD 25 and EUR 15 daily minimums by billing currency.
A daily budget is also an average delivery target, rather than a strict identical cap each day. Read the pacing rules before committing spend. A campaign-total budget provides stricter control over the overall test amount.
| Number | Hypothetical example | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Media spend | $300 | How much the platform charged |
| Clicks | 150 | How many ad clicks were recorded |
| Average CPC | $2 | Media spend divided by clicks |
| Qualified enquiries | 6 | How many enquiries met your sales criteria |
| Media cost per qualified enquiry | $50 | Media spend divided by qualified enquiries |
These are calculation inputs, not market benchmarks. Setup and management fees would increase the full cost of that test. If none of the six enquiries buys, the $50 figure cannot be presented as a customer acquisition cost.
Use the ChatGPT Ads cost guide to plan the expense categories, then change CPC and conversion assumptions in the ad test budget planner. A forecast should show what depends on your assumptions.
Connect the offer, ad and landing page
For the booking software example, the ad could offer a demo of team appointment calendars. Its destination should explain those calendars, reminders and setup requirements. Sending that visitor to a broad corporate homepage may force them to find the promised feature again.
Before spending, walk through the path on a phone. Can you understand the price or how to request it? Does the demo request work? Does the enquiry reach the person who will respond? Is a completed request recorded once, rather than every time the button is pressed?
This preparation also gives you a useful creative brief. A specific offer tells you what the headline should promise and which product detail the image should show. You can then test a meaningful message change, instead of changing colours while the offer stays vague.
Our landing page guide covers the handoff from ad to action. The creative guide covers readability and checking current asset requirements.
What should you measure in a first test?
Ads Manager reports campaign activity, and conversion reporting depends on the measurement you have configured. OpenAI's results documentation explains the metrics and reporting limits. UTM parameters can identify traffic in site analytics; they do not create Ads Manager conversion measurement by themselves.
Pick a completed business action before launch. For a service company, record qualified enquiries and eventual sales alongside form submissions. For a shop, evaluate completed orders, refunds and contribution rather than celebrating clicks alone.
A useful test question is: “Do visitors who arrive on this product page request a demo that our sales team accepts?” Define what an accepted enquiry means, who will classify it and how long you will allow for follow-up. The same campaign can look cheap by CPC and expensive by qualified enquiry cost.
Check the conversion tracking guide and UTM builder before launch. Use cost per qualified lead when assessing enquiries. The right next action may be to repair the page or change the offer, rather than increase the budget.
A practical starting point
- Confirm account and target-market eligibility.
- Choose one offer with a working mobile destination.
- Agree on a spend limit and a measurable completed action.
- Verify the action and follow-up process before launching.
Then follow the first campaign checklist. Treat the early test as evidence about a particular offer, audience and page. A completed setup is useful preparation; it is not proof of profitable performance.
