UTM tracking for ChatGPT ads: a naming plan you can keep using
Build consistent campaign URLs, test redirect behavior and distinguish analytics traffic labels from platform conversion attribution.

Consistent names help you compare campaigns over time. If one person writes “ChatGPT” and another writes “chatgpt,” reports can split what should be one source into separate rows.
Choose the convention once, save it with the campaign and reuse it. The labels should help a future reader understand the traffic without seeing your private campaign brief.
Start with source, medium and campaign
Google’s campaign URL guidance recommends source, medium and campaign parameters, and explains that their values appear in acquisition reporting. Case matters.
For a simple first test, we suggest source chatgpt, medium paid and a descriptive campaign name such as studio-trial-october. These are naming suggestions, not required OpenAI values. Check how your analytics channel rules classify the chosen medium.
Use content for the ad variation, such as reminders-a. Keep the campaign name stable when you swap one creative so the test remains grouped.
Use a URL that survives the destination path
Build it with the free UTM builder. Existing non-UTM query parameters and the fragment are preserved, but inspect the full resulting URL before using it.
Open the link on the device your customers use. Follow redirects and the main action. Check the final page keeps the relevant campaign parameters and the analytics setup reads them with the appropriate consent.
Keep static tags simple
OpenAI’s advertising basics supports static UTM parameters in destination URLs. Do not assume a dynamic token syntax from another platform will expand in ChatGPT ads.
Maintain a small link register with destination, source, medium, campaign, content and the ad using it. Check the register for typos before launch, while the labels are easy to repair.
When a URL already has a query string, append parameters through a URL builder instead of adding another question mark. Encoding matters when values contain spaces or punctuation.
Tagged visits and attributed conversions answer different questions
UTMs describe where analytics labels a visit as coming from. Platform conversion tracking applies its own matching and attribution rules. Neither label proves the customer would not have purchased without the ad.
Keep the analytics traffic view, the platform report and the order or CRM view side by side. If they differ, check the date range, event definition and consent setup before calling it a tracking failure.
Never place personal data in campaign values. URLs can appear in browser history, logs and shared links. Use a generic campaign or creative identifier, then keep any legitimate customer records in the system designed to protect them.
