CPC vs CPM vs CPA: what each advertising cost tells you

Understand click, impression and acquisition costs, calculate them correctly and avoid confusing optimization goals with billing.

Which cost are you paying headline with CPC, CPM and CPA cards.

CPC prices a click, CPM prices a thousand impressions and CPA prices the acquired action you define. Read them together to follow the cost through a campaign.

Choose a metric based on the decision you need to make. An exposure cost cannot tell you customer acquisition cost without information about clicks and completed outcomes.

Calculate each ratio from matching totals

CPCSpend ÷ clicksWhat did a reported click cost?
CPMSpend ÷ impressions × 1,000What did reported exposure cost?
CPASpend ÷ acquisitionsWhat did the defined outcome cost?

Google’s metrics reference documents the click and impression cost ratios. Keep period, filters and currency aligned when applying the formulas.

For CPA, say which acquisition you count. “$30 CPA” means very different things for a newsletter signup, an accepted inquiry and a new paying customer.

One campaign can have all three metrics

Try the CPC calculator, CPM calculator and CPA calculator with matching totals. None of these ratios supplies a universal “good” benchmark for your offer.

Billing and optimization are different settings

ChatGPT’s campaign guide describes impression and click billing alongside conversion-oriented optimization. A campaign optimized for conversions does not necessarily charge only when a conversion happens.

Check the billed unit in the actual campaign. Then assess whether the resulting business outcome is affordable. A familiar goal label from another platform is not enough to infer how the bill works.

A maximum CPC bid is also different from average CPC. One is a setting; the other is a ratio from reported spend and clicks.

Follow the cost through the funnel

If impressions are affordable but clicks are scarce, investigate message relevance and creative. If clicks arrive but completed actions do not, inspect the page, offer and measurement path.

If leads are cheap but customers are expensive, examine qualification and follow-up. Lowering CPC further may not fix the step losing most of the value.

Include service and creative costs in the business comparison. Platform spend ratios leave them out. Use qualified lead cost when raw inquiry volume is giving a misleading picture of the test.

Wait for reports to populate before comparing very recent ratios; OpenAI’s basics guide explains that different metrics can update at different times.
