How to read ChatGPT ad reports without mistaking clicks for results
Build a useful review around spend, delivery, completed outcomes and attribution settings instead of one attractive metric.

Use the report to decide what to change or check next. “CTR went up” leaves the decision unfinished if you do not know what happened after the click.
Start every review with the campaign’s agreed outcome and loss ceiling. Keep the settings beside the numbers so a changed window or date range does not look like a performance improvement.
Read delivery before diagnosing performance
Check whether the campaign served, how much it spent and whether the reported period covers the time you expected. OpenAI’s overview explains that impressions and clicks refresh sooner than spend. A very recent partial report may therefore combine values that are not equally current.
Record account timezone, date range and filters. If you changed budget, creative or targeting during the period, note the change time. A campaign-wide average can hide the effect of a later edit.
Match the metric to the business action
The measurement guide includes clicks, impressions, spend and conversions; order revenue and ROAS depend on the relevant purchase events. A lead campaign does not become an ecommerce revenue report simply because the account has a conversion source.
For a longer sales cycle, leave recent leads open until their outcomes are known. Keep the cohort date attached to them rather than pretending unfinished leads are permanent failures.
Record how conversions receive credit
Reporting windows and click or view credit affect the displayed conversion count. OpenAI’s guide also distinguishes the default ad-interaction date basis from conversion-time reporting. Save the choices with an exported report.
Compare the same settings across reviews. If a window changes, rerun the earlier period where possible or clearly label the difference. Do not attribute a reporting-setting change to a new ad.
Place the platform total beside completed order or CRM records. Differences can arise from the definition and timing of credit, even when the underlying action was recorded correctly.
Write a decision, its reason and its owner
A useful review might say: keep the budget unchanged, because the recent inquiries are still in sales follow-up; check the landing-page form, because several accepted leads lacked the information needed for qualification. Assign the check to someone and set the next review date.
Use the CPA calculator for cost calculations and the lead value calculator for an affordability check. Include setup and management costs in the business view even though the platform spend report does not contain them.
Save the numbers and settings with that decision. The next person should be able to tell what changed without interpreting a screenshot in isolation.
